Review: Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake

Gia’s life isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty darn good.  She may be a bit on the awkward side, but she’s got her two best friends and her books.  Honestly, what else does a girl need in life? All that changes when she accidentally falls into a book.  Yup. You read that right.  She fell into a book. When she lands in a library in Paris (thousands of miles away from the one she left in Boston), Gia is introduced thrown into a world far beyond her wildest dreams….and nightmares.

In a world where jumping through libraries is common, and there’s really no such thing as normal, Gia, accompanied by Arik, her leather-clad and oh so gorgeous protector, must give up her ordinary life to dodge an evil wizard hell-bent on her demise and save both the mystical and human worlds in the process. About FORGETTING AUGUST

She can forgive, but can she forget?
Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn’t matter that she’s moved on, that she’s about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can’t hurt her-because he’s in a coma. Except that he’s not anymore. Review: Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

If you haven’t read the first two books, STOP NOW unless you like knowing what’s going to happen before you read:-)

Now that that’s out of the way, Opal picks up right where Onyx left off.  As we know, Dawson has been freed from the DOD and is on a mission, regardless of harm to life and limb, to find and rescue Beth, the love of his life.  In order to convince him to stop acting irrationally, Katy promises Dawson that she and Daemon will help him rescue Beth.

Just when Katy has given up hope on where to start in the Beth hunt, in walks Blake.  Yeah… that Blake; douche-bag of the century and murderer extraordinaire.  Blake comes with a heavy load of blackmail thinly disguised as a proposition.  His deal?  He will help Dawson and clan rescue Beth if, in turn, they help him rescue Chris: his childhood friend who healed him and in doing so, turned him into the mutated half-human he has become. Letters to: Onyx (Lux #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Ever since their epic battle against the Arum, Katy and Daemon seem to be somehow connected on a cosmic level.  This creates all manner of issues, the primary being that Katy can’t figure out whether Daemon’s sudden “feelings” for her are real supernaturally influenced.  So, when a new boy comes to their school and shows interest in Katy, she jumps at the chance for a normal human relationship.  Obviously, Daemon’s not happy.  He’s throwing suspicion and jealousy around like ninja throwing stars that Katy can’t seem to dodge no matter how hard she tries.

But, when Katy begins doing things with her mind, shit hits the fan. Something worse than the DOD comes to town and threatens Katy and her paranormal friends and  Katy learns an important lesson: nothing is ever what it seems, and people are rarely who (or what) they say they are. Continue reading

Supply List for: Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Katy and her mom made a drastic move from sunny Florida to the mountains of West Virginia just before her senior year of high school.  While in some ways a fresh start is nice, Katy is less than pleased with starting over in this bum-eff-nowhere town.  She has every intention of spending the year she has left before college holed-up in her room, working on her book blog and being otherwise bored out of her skull.

That is, until she meets the next door neighbors.  Dee is sweet, kind, gregarious, and impossible not to love.  Her twin brother Daemon, on the other hand, is the complete opposite.  He’s so attractive, he’s almost painful to look at.  That pain is only matched when he opens his mouth.  Daemon is a class-A, no holds barred, douche-bag of the highest order.

As Katy spends more time with her neighbors, she begins to notice that they’re a bit….odd. She can’t really put her finger on what makes them different and brushes it off as a product of her over-active imagination.  All of that changes when Katy is attacked by a stranger dressed all in black and Daemon, of all people, comes to her rescue.5 Stars Continue reading

Review: Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares

Lily loves Christmas.  She carols, hangs lights, and is positively dripping with the holiday spirit.  But, this year, her parents are gone for the holidays and she’s stuck at home with her less than attentive older brother and his even less entertaining boyfriend.  When Lily’s brother not so nicely suggests that she “get a life” and leave him alone, she is obliged to honor his request.  He gives her the idea to make a new friend in a way she never would have thought of on her own.

Dash’s parents are both out of town for Christmas, leaving him to his own devices and blissfully alone during the worst time to live in New York– the freak-show that is the holiday season.  On a routine visit to his favorite bookstore, Dash comes across a mysterious red note book with an even more mysterious message:

“I’ve left some clues for you.
If you want them, turn the page.
If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.”

This one, seemingly innocuous message sends Dash and Lily on a scavenger hunt beyond anything either of them could have possibly imagined; leading them to discoveries about themselves, each other, and the holiday season itself.
